Hackathon challenge topics
Global GreenChem Hackathon 2025 is where innovation meets sustainability! For three days, visionary teams will take on industrial challenges, developing eco-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective solutions driven by the principles of green chemistry.
This year, participants will rise to challenges set by two leading companies:
DOW– a global chemical giant and a leading supplier of raw materials across industries.
Challenge:
design concepts for producing chemicals, polymers, or materials (such as polyols or functional additives) from renewable Ukrainian feedstock and/or industrial and household waste (wood chips, agricultural residues, packaging waste). Highlight potential processing methods and areas of application.
The goal: replace conventional petrochemical substances with sustainable, safer alternatives — and unlock new uses for waste.
ELF DECOR– a leading Ukrainian producer of decorative paints and coatings.
Challenge:
propose natural-based functional additives (binders, film-formers, rheology modifiers, etc.) that can substitute traditional synthetic ingredients in water-based construction materials (paints, primers, and other dispersions).
The goal: replace synthetic components with eco-friendly and safer analogues — while preserving high performance.

Who can participate?
The Hackathon is open to all those who are interested in the development of innovative industrial solutions based on the principles
of Green Chemistry.
You can register individually or as a team of 3-5 people. If you register for the Hackathon without a team, we will help you to get in touch with other participants who are also in need of partners to do a cool project together
Students and postgraduates
in chemistry, environmental science, engineering and related disciplines who have knowledge and skills in this area

The Global GreenChem Hackathon is part of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation's Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Networking Program (GreenChem) with financial support from the Global Environment Facility. The Program is implemented by the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University, USA. The Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre is the national implementing partner of the project
